Johnny Rockets – The True Blue Yankee Breakfast Experience

Breakfast happens to be the most important meal of the day, the diet pundits say. “Have a breakfast like a king,” they also say. That said, our fast pace modern lifestyle with peak hour traffic to boot rarely leaves us with any time to enjoy a full breakfast spread. Does anybody really ever eat more than a slice of toast and a cup of tea before rushing off for the day especially on weekdays?

During weekends, when you actually have all the time in the world to unwind, you yearn for those few extra moments in bed rather than sweating it out in the kitchen. Sadly, breakfast options in Delhi featuring an All American breakfast experience are rather limited and that is putting it mildly.

For wanderers and explorers like us for whom good food always happens to be the penultimate destination, Johnny Rockets has come up with an incredible solution and that too at prices that won’t embarrass your pocket book.

We were recently loitering around in Connaught Place , the heart of New Delhi, when we noticed a huge board that said ” Johnny Rockets serving Breakfast from 9- 11 AM ” . Might I claim that we gravitated toward the restaurant without knowing it?

Genuinely super-excited about this major happenstance, at least for my group who are all Foodies to the Max as Moon Unit Zappa of Valley Girl Fame would have said, much like we usually are when we come across something new in town, we went inside to check out the newest additions to the menu.

Johnny Rockets has so successfully captured embodies the typical American Diner look and feel with comfy red couches to old American hits like Break Break and Rockin Roby playing on the juke box. As we entered, we were graciously welcomed by the hostess with a warm smile. We chose to relax comfortably on the ground floor near their semi open kitchen.

The restaurant’s new breakfast menu consists of eggs, scrambled as well as omelette rollers. The menu also features a variety of breakfast burgers along with sides like bacon and potato tots. The best part is that the restaurant also serves pancakes and waffles which are our favourite breakfast items. The first thing we usually like to have in the morning to jump start the day is a hot cup of coffee. The restaurant serves excellent freshly brewed coffee, black as well as with milk on the side. We were served freshly brewed hot cups while we chose what to feast on from the menu. They also have fresh juices and tea on the menu for all non-caffeine addicts.

We ultimately ended up ordering was significantly more than what we were able to finish. We were in total oblivion about the monstrous portions. Not to worry! All the left overs were duly packed and we tossed coins to determine who got to take them home for an oncore breakfast replica!

From the eggs section, we ordered a Countryside Chicken Roller omelette with fries on the side and not two but four slices of whole wheat bread. You can order white bread if you wish. The butter comes in sealed pouches much like it does when you fly on international carriers. This was a 3 egg omelette with grilled mushrooms, capsicum, onions and lots of chicken and cheese stuffed inside. It also comes with a dollop of sour cream and the entire thing makes a killer combination. Definitely one of the best omelettes we’ve ever had .

From the breakfast burger section, we had the Chicken N egg burger which features a grilled chicken patty, a fried egg and lots of veggies and cheese sandwiched between a sesame bun. In every bite you could taste all the elements coming together and we enjoyed the entire experience. The dish also came with potato tots.

Coming to our favourite section— THE pancakes and waffles. We went ahead and ordered a strawberry and banana pancake and their savory chicken waffle. We were a tad skeptical about the combination of strawberries and bananas together. However, we were pleasantly surprised. A plate of pancakes includes a stack of three pancakes with lots of the toppings of your choice along with melted butter and maple syrup. We absolutely loved it. The pancakes were soft and fluffy, the strawberry rhubarb and bananas made a killer combination. This was undoubtedly a treat for our taste buds.

Finally, we happily transitioned to the final milestone of the day, the Chicken Waffles. We have heard a lot about savoury waffles and have even seen a lot of pictures on twitter and Instagram. But we have never had an opportunity to actually try them out. The waffles were huge with three deep fried chicken wings. It came with melted butter and maple syrup. Apparently the correct method to eat this is slathering lots of butter and maple syrup on top of the chicken and waffles and then polishing it off in a bite. Maple syrup and chicken together? Certainly sounded weird to us too, but trust us, it was good. As weird as it sounds, chicken waffles are definitely a must try when you visit Johnny Rockets for breakfast.

We washed down our meal with a cup of hot chocolate which we passed around the table. It was rich and a paradise for us dark chocolate fans in varying degrees.
